Tired of the blockbusters in cinemas now? Or maybe you’re looking for some award-winning films that are not being shown in Malaysia? Returning for its 3rd year, the Malaysian International Film Festival (MIFFest) is literally around the corner, and it will be your golden opportunity to catch some of the latest and rare films making waves in the film festivals circuit!

Starting on 14th July 2019 and running until 19th July 2019, MIFFest will be hosting screenings of movies from the cinemas of Asia, including India, Iran, China, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Opening the festival is Midi Z’s Nina Wu that was screened in the Un Certain Regard at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Other internationally acclaimed films of note that will be screening at the festival are Liang Ying’s A Family Tour, and Yeo Siew Hua’s A Land Imagined (which won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival and named Best Asian Feature Film at the Singapore International Film Festival in 2018). Audiences will also be able to re-watch hits such as Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots, PK, as well as Malaysia’s own Sell Out by Yeon Joon Han and Talentime by the late Yasmin Ahmad on the big screen. These screenings will be held at TGV Cinemas at 1Utama, Suria KLCC and Sunway Velocity. Tickets for MIFFest screenings are now on sale at TGV Cinemas where you can check for screening times.
Aside from these screenings, MIFFest is also organizing for the first time, in partnership with FINAS, five film symposiums to discuss about topics in the world of film. Aspiring filmmakers will be able to hear the thoughts of renowned filmmakers, such as Bollywood director Rajkumar Hirani, Taiwanese director Midi Z, Hong Kong actress Cecilia Yip, Indonesian director Joko Anwar and Malaysia’s own Ho Yuhang. They will speak about topics such as making Asian movies resonate with Western audiences and cultural diversity in films, among others. All the symposiums are open to public but would require the reservation of seats which are assigned on a first come first serve basis. For more information on the dates or to make reservation three days before the respective symposium, contact pr@mgga.com.my.
