Azim Rizal is a filmmaker from Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, who began his journey with short films spanning genres from light-hearted comedies to evocative magical realism dramas. Drawing from his upbringing in a mixed-race Malay-Indian family, Azim crafts stories that celebrate diversity and explore the complexities of varied perspectives. His short film “Whispers of the Paintings” won Best Short Film at the Kaki Lima Short Film Competition 2016, while “Take Me to the Non-Breathers” was screened at the Oregon Cinema Arts Film Festival 2018. His latest short film “Hello God” received special mentions at the Asia South-East Short Film Festival 2021 and Mini Film Festival 2020. His storytelling prowess extends to television with his first TV series, “Jabatan Kegembiraan” (Department of Happiness), currently in post-production. An alumnus of the 3rd Young Filmmakers Workshop by Next New Wave and FINAS Malaysia, Azim also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication (Film and Broadcasting) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, graduating in 2018. With “The Tides Will Decide”, Azim makes his feature-length directorial debut, venturing into documentary filmmaking with a poignant tale of resilience and survival.
